The Experience of Being Adopted.....

All adoptees share the experience of being separated from their birth mothers and fathers, and birth families of origin, usually very early in their lives. The impact of this experience is personal and varies with each individual.

Nevertheless, many adoptees find they have some common feelings about their experience of being adopted. These may include:

  • grief about the loss of their birth connection;
  • anger at their birth families, adoptive families, or the adoption system;
  • questions about identity and self (particularly at times of life transitions such as adolescence, marriage, or the birth of their own child(ren);
  • ongoing feelings of not belonging;
  • shame about disclosing their needs or feelings about their adoption;
  • a need to know more about their origins, or to meet their birth relatives; and
  • guilt based on a belief that their need for connection with their birth families conflicts with their connection with their adoptive families.

I have worked extensively as a psychotherapist with adoptees, as well as having been an advocate for the rights of adopted persons. My work has been informed by my personal experience as an adoptee. I would be happy to talk with you about your experience.
